My doctor is changing my thyroid meds (Levothroid plus Cytomel), and I cannot find a conversion chart which gives the equivalents of all the thyroid hormone replacements.
Cytomel (liothyronine) has a similar action to Levothroid (levothroxine) but it is more rapidly metabolised and has a more rapid effect. 20 micrograms of Cytomel is equivalent to 100 micrograms of levothyroxine ie. it is 5 times as strong. Its effects develop after a few hours and disappear within 24 to 48 hours after stopping treatment. It is used when a rapid response is needed.
