I received the new combination flu shot in my left arm and 5 days later came down with a severe case of shingles on the left side of my body ( from my waste to my knee, with PHN from my left underarm to my knee). I was wondering if my case is rare or if this has happened to anyone else.
Hi Annette, Firstly you poor thing to get shingles, having had it myself wouldnt wish it on anyone. I havent heard of it being related to any flu shots as its normally stress and appears when your immune system is down. Was your doc able to give you anything for it ? If its not treated immediatly it will take a while to recover and is an extremly painful illness. I left mine untreated for a while as didnt know what it was and was in agony for weeks. I hope yours disapears quickly, would be interested to know what treatments your doc has given/suggested for you. all the best
Hi Annette, No, not from the flu shot, it can give reactions, but not shingles for certain, it is, like was already said, something that can happen when your immune system is down, you are stressed, etc. But, are you CERTAIN that the diagnoses was correct and it IS shingles. For you to have it under your left arm seems out of the ordinary. Can you get a second opinion and does it seem to be going away? There is a shingles vaccination out there, but I am afraid if you already have it, it's not going to help, although due to the circumstances of your flu shot, the area the "shingles" is on and the fact that it happened within that time frame, I would check w/another Dr. to be certain that it truly is/was shingles that you had/have. To be taking medication for something that may not be what you really are suffering from could be not only dangerous, but not helpful regarding treating what the real illness might be. Just to be sure, if you can, check w/another Dr., hopefully you have insurance and can do so. Let us know, okay.
