The effects of both medicines are additive. Assuming the Nifedipine prescriber is aware you take Metoprolol this may be intentional. You will need to be monitored to ensure your heart rate, heart conduction and contractility are not reduced too much.
Diverticulitis is only an issue if you use are prescribed a slow release nifedipine formulation. Slow release formulations are best avoided.
