i have been prescribed lithium 450 mg but my doctor is not monitoring my blood levels. I read up on web that blood monitoring is very crucial. Is my doctor treating me properly?
Lithium for what? If it is "bipolar" get a second opinion. Personally, I think if you are labeled bipolar, 80% you are NOT bipolar-your doctor is in the "chic diagnosis motif" and bipolar is the "hip" diagnosis now-like social phobia was for a while, back in 70s anxiety with qualudes, and all kids are now adhd. If you are bipolar, Lithium SUCKS, does NO GOOD and as far as monitoring it, unless you take a bottle at a time, no real harm in toxicity-but doesn't it make you puke? It sure did me! Was I bipolar? Of course not! I have 9 degrees, published in biomedical journals, but even with my PHD in Neuroscience, I bought into my shrink's "bipolar" "diagnosis" (he is a moron) and took that nasty worthless Lithium for years. I was suffering OCD, major depression and severe horrid anxiety. A trifecta, but I was never bipolar! It is very rare, actually, but I guarantee 90% of shrinks have many "bipolars" they are "treating"! No, they are not! They have human beings who have "good moods" and "bad moods". A true bipolar is way down, then in a manic state out of control, blackouts, euphoria, pretty rare. Even here, Depakote is far superior in control than Lithium.
Get a good shrink-hard to find, but do it! Then comply with his or her Tx. Lithium has a horrid track record longitudinally with "bipolars". Also, I'd avoid any shrink who graduated med school before the mid 1980s.
Lithium monitoring is your least concern from my vantage point; your doctor sounds negligent and inept. Get a new one.
God bless you
