Was wondering if anyone knew if being prescribed antipsych meds rules you out for a M.D. because my psychiatrist suspects i am a sociopath and have manic/depr bipolar disorder. I'm in the process of deciding whether or not to go back because if I go back and get labeled with these disorders my plans for a 6 year med/academic college would be a waste of time since I would be on antipsych meds..I've been looking for an answer for a couple days and have had no luck thus far
You have every right to pursue your dreams of becoming a doctor. Otherwise I believe it's called discrimination. You may have to undergo a few additional "tests" but I see no reason why you should be banned from this profession. Sometimes I question how some doctors got their degree in the first place!? Please consult with an attorney. If your condition is under control, managed with medication, what is the problem?
My best wishes and go for it!!
Good question. I recently had to go to the hospital for pneumonia. My bipolar DR was not involved with the meds given for the pneumonia, the hospital DR was not familiar with the bipolar ones. Some bp given are for different reasons than are necessarily recommended, and are very closely, and well done, for compatibility with other bp drugs. It's a mess. The hospital had me drop everything and start over after 10 yrs of therapy! They eliminated some, changed the dose on others, ... you can't do that! It's a mess. Plus, as you say, we are now branded as.. what... lunatics? *sigh
