IBS, GERD, Gastric Reflux, infectious gastroenteritis..So these are the diagnosis I have gotten over the years by several doctors. How can we zoom in on the right one (s)? I take prilosec it works good on the acid but sometimes I will have to take something extra ie; Tums or Zantec I dont know what the doc prescribed for IBS, or Gerd. How do I find out what I really have?

sorry 2 here you r having so many health issues... I truly understand as I have several chronic health issues myself..with that being said... I take it you r seeing a GI doctor for all these issues correct? The way that I got to no what my chronic GI issues were was by seeing my GI and them doing different test such as colonoscopy and endoscopy to determine what is going on... that is the only way they r going to determine what is happening..I don't no what u mean by what diagnosis is right..you don't trust your doctor's diagnosis? bit confused on that ? if you don't feel confortable with the diagnosis or r doubting it..you r most definitely intitled to a second opinion and further testing providing your ins covers it..and most ins..not all but alot of them do cover 2nd opinions..meaning u can go to another GI and see if you get same diagnosis/results... keep us posted and I hope all goes well..if you have gotten these diagnosises over the yrs and haven't gotten any additional testing lately it is time to do so..I will add u as a friend and u can pm me if u have any additional ?'s etc... sending prayers your way..
Have you had a scope done? That is the best way to accurately diagnose you. I have the same problem. I have suffered with nausea, stomach pain, diarreah and constipation for many years. I was supposed to get a scope done but then became pregnant. I have been on different meds for acid reflux and colon spasms. I truly found my magic pill in nexium. It helps with everything with no side effects. I don't have much reason now to get further testing because it works so good. Only bad thing is it is expensive. $50 a month with my insurance. I take it every other day to save money and it still helps.
So maybe try nexium if you haven't tried it. Otherwise maybe try a gastroenterologist for further testing like a scope or colonoscopy.
Best of luck to you.
Hello Pauline. We could be of more help by knowing all the meds you are taking. Some have side effects that disrupt the GI tract and some cause constipation. The various diagnosis were done over time, right? One condition can lead to another. Some you mention can heal and some become more serious. In order to help make sense, please give your latest scope of upper and lower digestive system with dates and diagnosis.
Your doctor knows about the laxative? Chronic laxative use definitely messes up the bowels. You would improve with taking a fiber supplement to keep stools soft and lots of pure water, not soda or juice. Eat plenty of fruits and veggies. These will regulate your system along with yogurt and acidophilus type capsules. Have your GI doctor recommend what is best for you. Keep track of the esophagus and be sure you aren't a smoker. Erosion of that area can lead to cancer if not carefully controlled. I am sure you know that.
As for what do you have... Clear that up with your doctor. Be sure you always see the same doctor so consistent observations will note Any changes. Diet is essential and eating fiber will help. I suggest a dietician as well since they are familiar with these conditions and know what you can have in an effective bland diet. Stay in touch. I hope your condition will improve. Karen
Hi. I have all that wrong with me. I even had surgery for it. Take miralax every day. Your Dr should give you RX for it (generic work fine) It is not habit forming. They have my 5 year old grandson on it daily. Your making mistake taking lax every 3 days which could cause you to only be able to go if you use lax. Please call your Dr or buy some at drug store Walmart, etc. It never causes cramping (unless you overload the dose) I drink it every morning.I get scoped every 2 years for my Barrett's and have polyps so get colon every 5years as my Dad had colon cancer. I'm the only one of the 5 children who have polyps so you could wait and have that every 5 years. .But do what your Dr recommends. My insurance won't pay for nexium but heard it was great. I take same as you 40mg daily. You can slowly add on food. My main food that bothers me is iceburg lettuce, choc at night and some red sauce, I don't eat spicy food. Hope this helps
