I would like some friends to join my profile to talk about what my future is going to be like, How fast does the necrosis act in destroying the joint? Does it spread to other joints? I have read about people who have it in five joints, could this happen to me. Pain Levels, how bad do they get? When is replacement surgery recommended? What are people taking? I've been put on Fosamax, but have heard conflicting reports about side effects. As you can see, I have lots of questions.
My experience would tell me (me) is that you have around 3 years and 6 months before total collapse. You may not be able to walk at all in 18 months.
Pain levels? Extreme but about ten times worse in first few days after surgery.
One bit of advice that I feel is really important is do not get them done at the same time. Given that they get you out of bed first thing day 3, I only know of one person who made a full recovery from two knee replacements at once after the first two failed (he is a medico so I doubt that pain was too much of an issue for him).
Lastly, but elbow crutches, they are cheap at around $50 and compared to those wooden efforts are also an indispensable luxury walking aid.
