As a combination of active forms of folic acid, vitamin B6, and vitamin B12, Metanx® may help improve certain complications of diabetes. Specifically, this prescription vitamin is used as a dietary supplement in people who have certain blood vessel problems associated with diabetic peripheral neuropathy. It may also be used in people who have hyperhomocysteinemia (high levels of homocysteine in the blood), especially for people with leg or foot ulcers (open sores or wounds)
I have been on Metanx since 9/27-2012. It was not prescribed for diabetic neuropathy, but I am diabetic and have noticed that my feet feel much better, much less pain and my toes are no longer completely numb! I was put on Metanx for MTHFR, a genetic anamoly, which made me be diagnosed for years with Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome; but nothing helped, especially with the Chronic Fatigue. Now, not only I, but my husband and friends have noticed my increased energy and complete change in attitude and mood for the better. After many years of suffering, it is like a miracle.
As a caviat, however, my doctor told me I may NOT take any other B vitamins while on Metanx; so be careful that you do not take even a multi-vitamin with B vitamins in it. Not sure what happens when you do, but it was emphasized as very important to have Metanx be the ONLY B-vitamins I take.
I was given this medication for a neuropathy for a condition that was not associated with diabetes. Since that time my type 2 diabetes has taken an increase, and have found the medication to work in all situations. It gives me energy and helps with the neuropathy from the other condition.
