I've seen some posts from various people stating that they take 90mg a day of dextroamphetamine, but my doctor has told me that 60mg is the maximum dosage per day that can be prescribed. So I was just curious how other people are able to get prescriptions for more than that? I've been taking 60mg a day for about 4 and a half years now, and desperately need to have my dosage increased. However, my doctor has recently mentioned that he wants to slowly taper down my dosage and eventually get me completely off of this medication. Of course I'm freaking out about it because if he does indeed take me off of it then my life will slowly, but surely be ruined, I won't be able to do anything, anywhere, for anyone and might as well try to get on disability. I live in the Birmingham, Alabama area, so if anyone else who is from B'Ham knows a doctor that would be good for me to go to in order to stay on this medicine, please let me know ASAP. Thanks everyone, ~Katye.

Obviously this doc has an agenda and its not to keep you in peak form. Why are you on it? There are several good reasons to take it, and none of them will go away so you don't need them anymore. 60 mg a day is the recommended max dose. He's stretching the truth telling you more can't be prescribed. There is nothing to prevent it but his desire to get you off of it. Usually when there is a max dose, its because more then that won't be any more effective.
Those taking 90 may be doing so on their own. Your Dr may want to take you of it for reasons unknown to us, and I would hope you asked him why he want to do this. Please do so and then let us know what the response is, and as far as asking folks for other docs, they call that Dr shopping and usually all the pain docs in one area connect in some way, or will want a referral from you as to where and why you get this and why you're changing docs. usually more to the story, I would have you inquire as to why he wants to scale you back. let us know the answer.. Hope this helps.
Your doctor is probably following the Physicians Desk Reference for the maximum dosage. I asked my doctor to increase me past 60 mg. and she promptly said no, citing if my tolerance is high for 60 mg. it will soon be for 90 mg. also. So she suggested taking a drug "holiday" in which you skip a pill each day for a few days. It works but I found that I had to supplement with energy drinks and so on.
Yep cuz the amphetamine crash right? Too bad they didn't tell u it was gonna be like that beforehand huh? could have saved u a lot of fatigue i bet and amphetamine withdrawal. don't u just love health care? I don't. :P
Hi Kaytes, I hope you have found your new doctor by now, but just in case you haven't, after reading your question I ran across this info about what you are taking. It almost sounds like this is what your doctor is doing for you. If you have any quesions about this, please ask him/her. They are your best quide. Have a good day...
(Dosage of fixed-combination preparations containing various salts of dextroamphetamine and amphetamine is expressed as total amphetamine base equivalence.101 103 b
Adjust dosage according to individual response and tolerance; the smallest dose required to produce the desired response should always be used.101 102 103 b
When possible, therapy should be interrupted occasionally to determine if there is a recurrence of behavioral symptoms sufficient to require continued treatment)
lol what do u do when the smallest response required is above the FDA maximum like taking 80 mg Dexedrine? 100 mg Adderall XR? 144 mg Concerta? 120 mg Vyvanse?
I have been on 80 mg of adderall XR and it is more than max. I have hypersomia and i know how you are feeling. I have went through it with other doctors that wanted to taper me off ? When i was off completly i was off for 3 months and i was so tired i couldn't fuction at all!!! Get a different doctor !! Hope things get better for you ! Raymond
I have been on 90mg daily of Dexedrine for maybe 10 years now... thats (six) 15mg spansules a day... ive changed doctors four times over the last 10 years... and have been prescribed the same dose by all of them... and there was never any questions or doubts about my dosage when I did change providers ..so 60mg is not the highest dose by any means... just be sure to have a good co pay cuz 180 spansules monthly is very very expensive if you don't have good insurance...

I take it for narcolepsy
So what does he think, narcolepsy goes away? You need a new doc. One who understands narcolepsy. This isn't doctor shopping, this is finding one who knows something about your illness.
