Hello hearbeat3. I believe that your son will be allright. I'm surprised that hes been given the 10mg Spansules. I'd have started him on 5mg. Mind you, the dose can be cut down if he doesn't do well on the 10mg. As to the Spansules, i agree, applesauce, something of a nature that hes going to enjoy eating. I hope he does well. Regards, pledge
The spansule can be opened and the contents can be put into applesauce you just dont want to crush the little beads inside the capsule. Try to get him to swallow without chewing if you can. The little beads or pellets are formulated to be both immediate and time release so they release some medication right away and the rest over time so it is best if he doesnt chew them but if he does a little it is ok. I kind of agree with Pledge, as little as your little guy is, it might have been better to start him out on the 5's but dont try to use only a portion of a spansule-give him all of it but watch him to see how he does. If his little heart starts pounding, or he is restless, dizzy or has a lot of trouble sleeping, his Dr may have to reduce the dose. I had a son on 36mg of Concerta and he was a little bitty thing-when he was 12 he weighed much less than your son, he weighed around 68-70 lbs. He didnt weigh over 100 until he was close to 15.
These drugs have a tendency to keep kids a bit underweight because it suppresses their appetite so. I used to give my son high protein shakes like Ensure High Protein to help keep weight on him. He did end up needing growth hormones although they say it was not from the ADHD meds which is probably true because as he got older I took him off over summers and if it was med related he would have caught up during this time and his father was very small until he was older. His father didnt gain his height until after he was out of high school. My son is now normal height and weight with the hormones.
I am a 33 year old male that is 6'4 and 220 pounds. I am prescribed the same dose of spansules as your four year old. At times it is almost overwhelming. I think it borders on child abuse to give a four year old amphetamines, especially at this dose (I'm not necessarily blaming you. I'm sure you want the best for him, and people trust doctors.) You should try one yourself and see what it feels like. Makes me sad just to think about this. Poor kid. He's four! No wonder your twelve year old weights 98 pounds.
