hi im 18 yrs old and my neurologist diagnosed me with cronic headaches/migranes. i only wanted to take advil because i DO NOT want to take any drugs like narcotics or anything similar to it... but she prescribed me with sumitripan anyways. What kind of effects does it have? is it like taking vicodin? because i refuse to take anything that will alter my mind/body. please let me know.
Hi Kristen012, I feel for you having Migraine headaches as I know first hand how painful they are. I remember trying this medication earlier last year and I remember my face would become bright red and warm, like I was in the sun too much. But I don't remember any other side affects from this medication, although we are all different in how our body will react to the same medication.
Good luck, Liz.
Hi - Imitrex is nothing like an opiate medication, or one that will dull your mind, or be addictive - nothing like that. It works by constricting (making smaller) the veins in your brain because lots of times for migraine sufferers the veins in your brain become enlarged, and cause migraine pain. I had some side effects from Imitrex - the first 30 minutes I would feel a little short of breath, felt flushed, sweating - but not anything bad. I could continue working, and after an hour or so the migraine was completely gone. Gone! I now take Relpax, which is a similar medication but I have less side effects - the migraine symptoms just fade away with no side effects. These meds are the first line treatment prescribed by doctors for migraine sufferers - because they help - a lot. I'd say give it a try. If the side effects are too much, try another medication in that family as there are several and one might work better for you than another.
Also consider making a journal of what you eat, everything you do to see if you can determine what triggers your migraines. For me it is certain foods, some things I am allergic to, my period, weather changes. I am able to avoid the things I am allergic to, and stay away from my trigger foods and have greatly reduced the number of migraines I have. Please consider all these things - you are much too young to have migraine pain all the time! - ElizaJane
Immitrex to me was the next best thing to sliced bread for my migraine headaches. That was when they were injections you gave yourself, but I hear it doesn't come that way anymore. I had migraines 24/7 for 6 weeks at a time, & immitrex completely took them away & I don't have them anymore at all. My step daugther has them, & takes the pills, but says she still gets the headaches. You may get a feeling of increased heartbeat or something in that order, but I don't think it's anything to worry about. Another med I have heard is good is Axert. I wish you the best. Migraines are the pits...
