Has anyone found a med or combo of meds to sleep ? I've been on Everything. I either can't fall asleep or stay asleep.. No matter what I take. My PD gave me Saphris. The first week it knocked me out immediately ..then it just stopped working. Even when I increased the dose. I absolutely hate Seroquel. It's the Only drug that helps me sleep, but it causes me extreme fatigue and weakness. So I'm always exhausted and have packed on 50 pds with it. Getting Sooo Frustrated
I had been on Seroquel for 5 years and it made me eat more, and I ended up with 60lb more and am pre-diabetic.
I weaned off it last year and found that Zzz-Quil (over the counter) works for me... it takes a while to be able to fall asleep "by yourself' again, after quitting Seroquel. I am the worst sleeper, since childhood and thought I would never sleep again after Seroquel... but it worked with Zzz-Quil. I didn't do it with my doctor since he didn't understand and wanted to put me on a prescription sleeping med (I had been on all of them before... from Lunesta, Ambien, etc, but never liked the side ffects of those meds). I am stuck (by choice) with the Zzz-Quil and it works... Sometimes I take it with an Ativan if I can't fall asleep with Zzz-Quil itself. In the beginning I took the liquid kind and the brand only... now I am taking the cheaper generic version as a capsule and it works just as well.
Best of luck & I hope you can find something that works for you!
Have you ever tried trazodone it's a cyclic anti depressants but I was prescribed it for chronic pain & insomnia & it helps me to get some sleep. I think that all sleep aid meds slow down after a while. I take it regularly & sometimes I don't even have to take it. Taking trazodone on a regular basis it can stop working & you'll need an increased dosage if it continues. I started out w/ 50 mg in 2011 & last yr it was increased to 100 mg. Hopefully this helps you.
I take 30 mg. of Saphris all at night and rapidly move the bottom of my tongue against the wafers to increase the absorption time -while laying in bed.- (knocks me out cold in minutes) I also take 50 mg. of Benadryl to counteract the muscle stiffness that comes with the Saphris which adds to sleepiness factor & complete the night with 20 mg. of Belsomra. If I didn't have to pee in the middle of the night, I'd never wake up before 7 hours... I have to leave a light on in the bathroom because with this cocktail I'm like a zombie & have walked into walls. I'm groggy for 15 minutes in the morning, but this is the best sleep I've gotten in a long time. I've been on Saphris 13 months & Belsomra for 3.
I'm Bipolar 1 Rapid Cycling so every day can be a challenge, at least I know that sleep is no longer a concern and I'm confident that Saphris & sleep has kept me at nothing above hypomanic for over a year; its nice to experience a little normalcy and consistency.
Best Wishes & Be Well.
