any suggestions for relief would be appreciated. I take Methotrexae
Have you tried an antihistamine?,
I have changed my shampoo and conditioner to the Aveeno brand, it doesn't have as much perfume as some of the others. I was told to go a scent free as possible with anything I put on my skin.
My itching didn't come from the Methotrexate it came from the DM. I had to use steroids on my scalp for almost a year to get it under control. I can't remember the name but it was liquid and helped a lot. I also had A LOT of hair loss for which I took and still do Biotin, 5,000 IU's twice a day. For shampoo and conditioner I use nioxin #1 and have been very pleased. Good luck!
I have had Dermatomyositis for nine years. I'm scornful when people complain of minor itching. My doctors have all told me that for some reason, the scalp itching is the most difficult, if not impossible, to control. Now, the itching has turned into severe pain. I also have hair loss and always wear a cotton chemo scarf. I keep my hair buzzed short. It hurts to buzz, but not having hair helps with applying lotions, etc. I have found a company that carries products that help a bit. JustNaturalSkin puts out an Itch Shampoo and Cond. I've also tried their Hair Loss Sham. & Cond. I can use that about once per week - have not seen any results. The Itch S & C, I can use nightly. At this point, I'm just looking for relief! I've also tried a few of their other products. Some I can use, others I can't. The best thing about this company: One month return on any product.
My dermotologist recently prescribed Lidocaine 5% to help with the pain, and the numbing of that lets me get a little bit of sleep at night. The pain is so bad, it hurts to put my head on my pillow. Good luck with your itching. By the way, I've also used Clobetasol - helped for awhile but not long term.
I was prescribed methotrexate with minimal results. I am presently prescribed to azathioprine (imuran) which I've had a more positive response. I am presently searching Google for home remedies for my extreme itchy scalp. I'm using a type of charcoal based shampoo which helps for a while, but still searching. My main itching sites are my head, which is the worse, causing severe hair loss and soreness, also my upper back, scapula area. There are essential oils that when used on my head, give back some of the moisture I need so badly. My muscle issues have improved with strengthening exercises at the local YMCA. Exercise is the key to that issue, while not pushing too far. Being dormant just intensifies the muscle weakness. Take care and I hope I've helped a little.
You'll want to see a dermatologist for guidance. Topical steroids, steroid injections and a range of immunosuppressives (in addition to methotrexate) are frequently used.
