Hi, Barb! trazodone is an effective antidepressant used to treat Major Depressive Disorder (MDD).
Recently a few doctors began prescribing it off label because sleepiness is one of it's major side effects. It may make you drowsy for the first few days to a week or so, but it'll pass.
My husband was prescribed trazodone for sleep too, but it didn't work until his dosage was raised to that used to treat depression. Surprise!! His underlying depression and anxiety lifted and now he says he feels like a human being again.
Best regards and I hope it works as well for you. Wildcat
From my experience with Trazodone its not a very effective antidepressant but can be wonderful for anxiety and insomnia. I'd rather take Mirtazapine for anxious depression if a little weight gain isn't a problem as its a far better med for depression. Just my opinion but Trazodone wont help really severe depression and especially at 50 mgs
