... Needless to say I do not! I was very insulted, I would like to know if anyone else has been asked this? The only reason I can fathom for her asking this would be that my antidepressant was upped again. Do they have to ask this?
Depression - I Just saw my psychiatrist and was asked if I do drugs! Is this normal practice?
Added 14 Nov 2013:
I have seen this Dr. 3 times, each time she had raised the dosage on my antidepressant. I don't know if she thinks I have illegal drug induced depression or what?! I was floored, I didn't know really what to say besides, "no! " lol she is a PA not a doctor.
You know with todays climate on narcotics making us all out to be drug addicts, anything is possible. Did you tell her you found the question quite insulting? Does she know you or was it a new dr for you? I would find that question offensive myself, so you're not alone in the kind of response you felt. If someone does something that might make them suspect you were using drugs I can see it, but for the average person?
Hi kaw! Of course they do!!! Doctors have to know everything you're taking ~ scripts, OTCs, herbals, especially streets.
They can cause symptoms that interfere with diagnoses, and can interact dangerously with psychotropics.
It's nothing personal, not that she suspects you do ~ it just is and should be standard practice for any doctor.
Hang in there, kaw! WCV
unfortunately they do and will go as far to drug test they did me once a year. I don't do illegal drugs either. I felt the same as you. don't worry about what they think, some of them are on as many meds as we are if not more lol. hope this was helpful or at least made you smile sorry they did you that way, but you aren't alone. huge hugs
Hmmmm, I guess you could turn this around and say, "why no, I don't do drugs... do you?"
But honestly here, I have been seeing my psychiatrist for some 15+ years. He has a marvelous way of asking "those" types of questions, too. He'll say, "by the way... what exactly are you taking these days?" We usually have conference calls because I don't sit very well in a car these days. He already knows what I look like, too, so when he asks those type of questions, it isn't insulting me or insinuating anything.
I don't think its offensive for them to inquire, a lot of people with mental illness do abuse drugs. Mine asked the same question. Let's face it some of the medication we are on are pretty damn potent. Mixing other drugs, illegal or legal with the prescriptions we are on could be lethal (like Heath Ledger lethal). I smoke the occasional blunt and I let my doctor know.
Don't be offended. A good doctor should ask the hard questions in my opinion.
Kaw06 Hi my friend,You know i have been asked that even by my reg doctor just as regula as do you smoke.Yes it is upseting But one reason i know is if you do or have done drugs in the past it can effect or cause some of your symptoms,I agree it is like a insult i have never done drugs othe than from the doctor but they have to know for even interactions and its a different world out there from what it was with illegal drugs... Also you antidepressant it is not unusuall to have the dose changed at different therapy doses its much better to slowly step many of these drugs up slowly then just give you a high dose to start with this is a smart prescriber don't be insulted they have to protect themselves same as asking if you smoke or drink dear ... BY the way i am so sorry if this is hard to understand i am shaking so bad this am i can hardly type i am on my 20 odd minute trying to help you understand Chuck pdx oregon pharmacy tech retired..have a good weekend dear
Dear kaw06, You Dr. is a P.A??? Do you go to a state operated clinic by chance? The anti-depressant, Is that all she's giving you? If so be very careful!!! Until this year, All I ever saw was a P.A. 300 miles from me through the computer monitor!! Not even in person!!! And couldn't even get my refills for 6 months last year!!! I ended up in the hospital. The therapist there finally saw me after 6 months, I was a mess, severely depressed, and she (IVC) Forced into the hospital! Please be careful... Keep in touch. Sue 4
