I want to be able to function normally not sleep through my alarm and not want to sleep constantly will amitriptyline help with this, all I have read is that it helps you to sleep?
I only take 25 mg at night. It does not help with my depression, only sleep. I also have left over drowsiness for an hour or two when I wake up. If you are sleeping too much due to depression, I would not recommend Amitriptyline. The side effects are sleepiness. There are lots of newer antidepressants that can help with depression and do not promote as much sleepiness and if they do it goes away after 4-6 weeks of use. Hope you find what works for you soon :)
I started taking amitriptyline to help me sleep. I ended up taking 100mg for sleep. When I started with depression symptoms my doctor upped me to 150mg at night. It helps with sleep and depression. It was originally a depression medicine and they found it helps for many other issues. If will help you sleep better which may in turn help you to not fall asleep during the day. I take it about 30-60 minutes before bed so when I wake up I don't feel sleepy.
Hi, kaz! The oversleeping you describe is very often a strong signal for depression. Treat the illness and you'll treat the symptoms. But as Laurie says, it can take several weeks to start feeling the positive results of your medication so try to be patient.
Best wishes, WCV
Just for the record amitriptyline didn't make me drowsy at all.
Kaz; I am with Laurie and WCV on this you need at least a few weeks to adjust to the medication and the higher doses works very good for sleep and depression this is one of the old time stand bys all you can do is try it for at least 2 weeks and if the problems continue then ask the doctor about something else. We are all different and these medications work different on each person. So it's a trial and error and part of your sleeping could very well be the depression. Keep working with the doctor and you well find something that well help there is light at the end of the tunnel
I agree with Chuck and WCV. Give it a try for a month or so and write down how you are feeling and sleeping every day in a journal, to see if the medicine is helping. But if this one doesn't work keep trying! You will find one that will work for you I promise. It just takes patience. Best of luck and I hope you feel better!
Hi, i was another person that took Amitriptyline off label, to help with pain and to help me sleep. I also have mental health conditions, including depression, but i'm not sure how much Amitriptyline helped in this area? There's no reason not to give it a try... but if you are unhappy about this medication, ask your doctor/psychiatrist if you can try an alternative. I take Citalopram which has worked wonders for me
This is a very old from the 50's medication with a few interactions, I was prescribed this and made me extremely dizzy. And so tired. I am now on citalopram 20mg and clonazepam. Wishing you the best of luck. If you sleep too much maybe ask for a newer medication. I have depression and anxiety.
Well to answer your question, no it wont help your hypersomnia although it may not add to it. Did you try other agents before you were Rx'd Elavil? I think I wouldn’t wait around to see if it works because its 1 of he more sedating Antidepressants out and you already want to sleep all day. Any SSRI/SNRI Wellburin, Nuvigil, Provigil, Stimulant drugs to augment or Abilify would help you. Talk to your Psychiatrist about it because thats not going to give you what you want
