You can get it without having a period. In fact, as you aren't having regular periods, I wouldn't rely on trying to get it when you're bleeding, as you don't know at this point whether it's an actual period, or just hormonal, breakthrough bleeding (which is common).
You can have the shot now, you just need to wait 7 days after getting it, before you have unprotected sex.
