You don't have periods on Depo. A period is washing away the lining of the womb that is prepared each month, ready to accept a fertilised egg. As you don't produce any eggs on Depo, you don't have a period.
It takes your body time to adjust to the synthetic (man-made) hormone that you are putting into your body when you use Depo Provera.
Many women have irregular or even constant breakthrough bleeding, until they've had their second or third shot, then they tend to not bleed at all.
This is hormonal bleeding, & because you're dealing with hormones, you can expect other hormonal symptoms. These symptoms can be close to those you would get in a period or even pregnancy, because Depo is tricking your body into thinking it is pregnant, so it doesn't produce an egg. It even softens your back in the pelvic area, so it can expand, ready to have a baby grow inside you.
