I had the toxic ammonia levels and never once did anyone test me until I told my Dr. I was seeing worms in my cat's poop as I laughed. She said that I had to get an ammonia test and it didn't matter if I fasted. The longer you are on depakote your ammonia levels can do what mine did because it keeps building up. I was wondering shouldn't this be tested regularly instead of when you show you are fighting off a coma? I passed out several times per day and had a mystery illness. I just don't want others to suffer like I did and I know others have had to gone through this as well. Many don't know they have this poisoning.
Depakote ER - Ammonia levels?
Added 9 Jul 2013:
P.S. My cat didn't have worms in their (2 indoor only 100% of the time and treated with flea meds every month on time) poop and though I wasn't sure if I had already died and was living in an alternate universe where I felt miserable, I now know I felt that way because I was dying from the ammonia.
I agree with you.
High ammonia levels are an under-recognised side effect of Depakote.
It may be because ammonia levels are not standard blood tests to do and this test is also a bit of a pain, in that the blood has to be kept on ice immediately after drawing it.
I am certainly glad that I did not stay on depakote then as it is hard to get my doctor to do much blood work. He seems to feel that if you don't have any symptoms of anything then why bother.
Every time he is away I try to go see the doctor that fills in for him as the substitute doc usually orders a complete blood work when he sees how long it has been.
My roommate has 14 in door cats, (Not my house) so I deal with a lot of cat urine and poop. Can exposure to these things affect my ammonia levels? I am on a lot of meds and my dr does not know this part of my living situation. Should I be concerned? Should I get tested?
This is what has been happening to my son for years. It recently has gotten worse over the past year.Only recently did psychiatrist order a 'rare' ammonia levels test. It turned out very high.My family doctor was informed and he did a 2nd test that was even higher. Why oh why has this doctor never asked for the ammonia test before???
I lost my original son.Replaced by someone else.
I was told that due to the severity of my sons dx ,I cannot remove depakote. Is that true...
My son started out with mild autism Academically. Very bright..Now he is over 300 lbs, bloated by years of heavy meds which include 17 years of being on depakote. Can I help him heal .His liver? His brain? Help!!!
