... years old. An annual camping trip is coming up in two weeks. I'm not a heavy drinker but will a couple of beers cause a problem. I know drugs and alcohol are always discouraged but I will have only been on the Depakote for a month and won't drink more than 2-4 beers. Advice from any new Depakote users? Not sure if it makes a difference but the first week I had horrible side effects; nausea, unable to sleep at night but sleepy/tired all day, mild dizziness and extreme fatigue.
Depakote is something not to mix with alcohol as both substances are extremely hard on your liver. If you are going to consume alcohol I would skip your depakote dose that day. I was on Depakote 500mg back in 2013 and developed NASH (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease) from the medication.
**Interactions between your selected drugs
ethanol divalproex sodium
Applies to: ethanol, Depakote (divalproex sodium)
GENERALLY AVOID: Alcohol may potentiate some of the pharmacologic effects of CNS(Central Nervous System) -active agents. Use in combination may result in additive central nervous system depression and/or impairment of judgment, thinking, and psychomotor skills.
MANAGEMENT: Patients receiving CNS-active agents should be warned of this interaction and advised to avoid or limit consumption of alcohol. Ambulatory patients should be counseled to avoid hazardous activities requiring complete mental alertness and motor coordination until they know how these agents affect them, and to notify their physician if they experience excessive or prolonged CNS effects that interfere with their normal activities.**
Lee you mentioned that the camping trip is coming up. This should give you enough time to ask your neurologist if you can drink alcohol while taking Depakote.
I myself suffer from epilepsy and took Depakote for approximately 6 years before my neurologist changed my seizure medication.
It was recommended by my neurologist not to drink alcohol.
Lastly, I don't recommend skipping any seizure medication especially while you're on vacation camping with no clinics or hospitals near by.
