I have noted in my medical records, and when asked by nurse / assistant, if I have any allergies they should be aware of and I say, yes, to penicillin! I break out in severe hives & breathing becomes difficult. Why, after surgery would the doctor prescribe amoxicillin? Is this drug not part of penicillin family sorta speak?
You're right, they are in the same family of antibiotics. However, many people (myself included) are allergic to penicillin, but not the "family" derivatives. So I can safely take amoxicillin. I can easily understand if you feel uncomfortable taking any of the "cillin" drugs. You should just explain to the Dr that you're uncomfortable with that particular antibiotic and ask him to prescribe another one. I doubt he would have a problem with your request.
