I'm on my 4th day of taking amoxicillin and I'm still in unbearable pain. The swelling in one side has gone down but the other hasn't had any improvement. Is this normal or should I go to the doctor again?

Hi Alyssalaz,
I'm sorry you are feeling so poorly. I grew up with these and they truly are horrible.
Did they take a culture?
After 24 -48 hours you should start feeling better. You should no longer be infectious.
There are 2 types of Strep A & B.
You should call the doctor and have them check the culture results.
The 24 hour is the Preliminary which tells the organism.
The next 24 hours determine which antibiotics are best for the strand in whish you have.
In other words, you are getting treatment but another antibiotic may be more effective.
Gargling with salt water may help relieve the pain.
You don't have to go to the doctor. This is something that can be done over the phone.
Good luck
:-)
alyssalaz; Yes this is pretty normal I do agree with Windchime there really is not much more the doctor can do until you have finished the complete order of this prescription. But you could give them a call and let them know you're not feeling much better. But it normally takes at least 5 days for many people depending on how bad you were before you really feel much better. Good luck and make sure you take the medication just as it says and even if you get to feeling better continue it until they are all gone.
