Hi, katjacks! Antidepressants can cause suicidal thoughts in children and young adults, but this occurs very rarely. Still caution should be exercised. Otherwise, it's the same as an adult taking it.
Best wishes to you both. Wildcat
Hi, i would advise you to make yourself aware of the possible side effects that she could develop. These are all potential, and many people may develop a few, but certainly not all of them!! The main things you need to watch for are thoughts of harming oneself or suicidal thoughts, which require immediate medical attention. I started taking an SSRI when i was 13, and it really improved my quality of life. It can take a while for someone to settle with antidepressants so don't be surprised if your daughter doesn't notice a positive difference right away. I'm hoping her doctor/psychiatrist has explained how the medication works? These medications are being prescribed to teenagers much more frequently these days with very positive results
Great answer, Delila! Here is a listing of POSSIBLE side effects of Celexa ~ these apply to people of any age ~ the most common being dry mouth, sleepiness, and nausea which can easily be managed with home/OTC remedies and usually resolve in days to a couple of weeks. Far less than 10% of patients report ANY of the side effects listed and certainly not ALL.
