Depending on the medication and if it was stored correctly. Some medications, like tetracycline can be harmful if old.

So long as the medication has been stored properly, and if it is powder that needs to be reconstituted, has NOT been reconstituted, then it should be fine. The military just published a major study of medication, and how effective it is after the "use by" date. They found that almost all of the medication retained it's effectiveness up to 10 years, the length of the study. A few medications lost some of their potency, but were still good, but like I said, it has to be properly stored in a cool dark place.
