it last week my pharmacist said it was on back order and had no idea when he could get it. Due to the amount of medicines I am on, I have to price shop, so I use 4 pharmacy's. I called them all, no go. One finally told me that it wasn't just back order but the manufacturer had temporarily stopped making it due to FDA regulations and Restoril and its generic are included. I am a true insomniac and need help sleeping. When I told my doc about this, he called in regular Ambien, 10mg. I have never used this b4 and hope someone can tell me what to expect. Can it help a true insomniac?
CHELLEKAY; wELL Ambien is pretty good, HAVE, TO BE HONEST, SOME DO GREAT OTHERS IT IS NOT WORTH A DAMN BUT IT SURE WOULD BE WORTH A TRY. IT IS A COUSIN OF DALMANE AND ABOUT AS CLOSE AS YOU MAY GET. BUT IT'S NO CHOICE WITHOUT ANY DALMANE FOR NOW. I DO KNOW I TOOK IT YEARS AGO AND IT WORKED REALLY WELL FOR A FEW MONTHS THAN JUST WORE OUT ON ME. EVEN IF IT WOULD DO THAT FOR YOU, MAYBE THE Dalman well be back out. wish I could be of more help.

I want to add my 2 cents.
It's a really old drug. The newer sleep meds supposedly don't have the next day drowsiness. You probably don't feel it because your body is used to it.
Speaking as a fellow insomniac (sleep 4 hours every third day) I understand your desperation.
I've nevered tried Dalmane but I've tried Restoril, Ativan and Ambien.
I've also tried Remeron, Seroquel and Trazadone.
I've never had good sleep habits because of my job as an RN. I'd work 3 different shifts within a week.
I the had a hysterectomy which took away my hormones that cause sleepiness.
I then developed RSD (from a routine venipuncture) which is a debilitating pain syndrome. It's when I starrred missing nights at a time.
I'd suggest you research maintaining good sleep habits. They have gotten much better than the time of ... don't drink coffee before bed...
They will teach you CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) which are mental exercises that help get you feeling back in control.
I felt like a victim knowing if I didn't take a med, I'd be awake forever .
I started 10 years ago with Melatonin. It worked for awhile (couple of months) and gradually increasing it until I was at max dose.
I asked for a script because I wS turning into a basket case.
I started with Restoril 15mg which worked for 6 months to get 4-5 hours sleep. I then increased it to 30 mg. Tolerance develops quite quickly with these sleep scripts.
The best thing to do is only take it as needed. Practice the CBT and other ways to help get to sleep. Or just take it when you can't afford to lay around all day feeling like you are in a tub of cement!
Next I went on Ambien 5mg which was much better than the Restoril.
You are asking what to expect.
I find I need to get into sleep mode around 9pm. I get everything done because once you take the med you may get too stimulated just throwing a load of laundry in.
Once I go to bed I will take the Ambien. I'm doing hypnosis to keep my mind and anxiety off sleeping. I put my body in second gear. Lol...
Initially, you will just fall asleep so make sure you have your night time stuff done. Take it when you are ready to sleep because you may miss the window of its effectiveness. If my mind was racing I missed my opportunity. I was tired the rest of the night but no sleep.
It was great at first because no tossing and turning just sleep. I noticed that I wasn't dreaming. Dreaming is important so really try to limit your use whenever you can.
The other frequently reported side effects of getting up during the night and having no memory of it!
I blamed the kids for making a mess in the kitchen. I finally realized it was me! I must have been hungry and went down to the kitchen. I had no idea of what I ate!
I'd suggest you start taking it on the weekend if you work. You don't want to be driving or working if you have next day drowsiness.
I was good with 5mg until I realized I was getting 3 hours at most.
My doctor put me on Remeron which did nothing except a huge appetite. It also made me faint when getting up.
My heart was super fast, BP super low and I ended up in the ER. I could not make it to the refrigerator without falling on my face. I looked through my sleep deprivation into the mirror and didn't recognize myself. I gained 30 lbs in two months!
Now I list it as an allergy.
She put me on Seroquel with the Ambien and still no sleep and passing out. I tried it for a month and it's now listed as an allergy. It took forever to lose the weight and my knees were affected to where I could barely walk.
I'm just giving you MY experiences.
I want you to understand that these drugs do have bad effects that are not side effects but cause damage.
Next she upped the Ambien to 10mg the max dose.
It was good for 6 months.
Btw... Have you had a sleep study?
Mine indicated I needed something to put me to sleep and keep me asleep.
The bottom line...
I found my miracle drug!!!
Trazadone along with the Ambien.
Trazadone 100mg and Ambien 10mg.
It's been 7 months and I sleep every night with 6 - 7 hours. No next day drowsiness. I go to sleep and stay asleep. I don't feel a tolerance developing.
So that is my experience. Do try to learn as much as you can about sleep hygiene. It makes you feel more in control over your life, if that makes sense.
Go to a specialist if it's not working. Lack of sleep affects your immune system. It also causes weight gain because you are too tired to exercise .
Weight gain causes increased blood pressure . Lack of exercise causes a whole host of problems including arthritis.
I know docs are hesitant to start these drugs but the pain, suffering and the secondary diseases are well worth it.
