I am very sensitive to epinephrine (i.e. can't take it, causes SEVERE panic attacks). Will Cymbalta have the same effect since it has norepinephrine? I'm afraid to even try it as my reactions to epi scares me!
I really don't like to deliver bad news, yet Kelilta715, IF you are so very sensitive to norepinephrine you may indeed have the horrible side effect of panic attacks. I too suffer from this problem and am also sensitive to anything with a dopamine reuptake inhibitor, which turns me into an instant crabby witch.
Perhaps, if you start on a very small dose and increase the dose by the tiniest increments, just maybe you won't suffer the dreaded panic attacks. Just an idea.
May I ask if you have been diagnosed with depression or is the Cymbalta prescribed for something akin to Fibromyalgia? A bit more info may garner more opinions and more answers from the members on this site. We do have a few pro's, who are schooled and very knowledgeable regarding all things medical.
Another idea is to treat the panic attacks by taking a small amount of a benzodiazepine, such as Xanax or Clonopin (klonopin?), Valium or a different benzo, until your body adjusts to Cymbalta. Many folks do not want to add yet another medication to the mix, but a benzo may be taken for a few weeks to curb your side effect. Just a short time, comparatively.
Wishing you all the best,
Epinepherine and norepinepherine are two different things. Cymbalta doesnt contain norepinepherine, it effects the reuptake of what is already in your body (it also affects the reuptake of serotonin). Cymbalta wont affect you like epinepherine does. The most commonly observed adverse reactions in Cymbalta-treated patients (incidence of at least 5% and at least twice the incidence in placebo patients) were nausea, dry mouth, somnolence (sleepiness), constipation, decreased appetite, and hyperhidrosis (sweating). You do know that your body secretes epinepherine on its own dont you? It is called adrenaline. It is supposed to make you feel panicky. It is the main hormone in our fight or flight response.
When it is given as an injection, it can be uncomfortable since it increases your heart rate and makes you feel fluttery in the chest but this is a useful thing when one is faced with danger. This is the hormone that allows people to lift cars off their children and that sort of thing. Cymbalta wont feel anything like epinepherine or adrenaline.
Cymbalta caused panic attacks and extreme anxiety for me and after what I have been through getting off of it I advise anyone considering this drug to research it thoroughly.
We have to become our own best health advocates as there are just too many drugs out there for our doctors to keep up with the lastest information on each one. We owe it to ourselves to research each med we might try before we take it whenever possible.
This site provides a wealth of information on drugs, side effects and interactions between drugs we take.
