I see no problem with adding Cymbalta to your Lyrica. Many fibromyalgia patients take this exact mix as Lyrica and Cymbalta are two different classes of medications there should be no problems unless Cymbalta can wreak havoc with your blood sugar, which I doubt.
Just make certain that all of your doctors know every medication you are taking, that is of paramount importance.
If Cymbalta doesn't work you could give amitriptyline a go. If those don't help, and if you've never tried Neurontin, could be of great help for the pain you suffer with! Neurontin (gabapentin is the generic name) certainly has helped my neuropathy, which is in my legs and has "crawled" up my back as well, yet I don't have diabetes but I doubt that has any difference upon the medications taken. Neuropathy seems to be very difficult to treat, so finding the right medication is hard to do, we begin to feel like lab rats, trying so many different medications, lol! Very painful indeed! I feel for you.
I was on both and my pharmacist told me, and called my doctor, to say that I should only be on one nerve pain med at a time. Something about they interfere with nerve pathways (that makes sense) and the brain then doesn't know what to do with the medication so it stores the meds in your fat cells. Evidently that is not good! It took me 18 months to get off Cymbalta (kept on having withdrawal symptoms so had to go slowly) but am only on Lyrica now. I also had a Spinal Cord Stimulator implanted which helps a lot with the nerve pain. Regards - EJ23
I am also diabetic & i have taken both the Cymbalta & Lyrica for 8 yrs & my dr. has never said anything about interactions. And neither one of these drugs increased my blood sugars.
You did not say if you have already been on the Lyrica for awhile. If it is new & you have side effects as some people do then your other option is the Neurontin (generic-Gabapentin).
Also just to let you know I also take Neurontin with the two other meds (for another medical condition) but I have had No side effects or problems.
I hope these meds give you relief.
