There are two kinds of meds for migraines. One avoids the migraine, which is called a prophylactic, and you take them everyday, such as Topamax, and the others are to help get rid if the pain once the migraine is in full force. They generally are triptans, which are prescription, or you can buy over the counter meds, such as Excedrine Migraine.
BUT if you take any pain reliever more than 2 times a week, you risk rebound headaches. I had a whole summer of migraines almost constantly because my stupid doctor never told me. Then I had a full stroke, which occasionally can be caused by migraines.
So don't depend on your doctor to tell you all the facts. I don't think it was the cause of my stroke, but that doctor's same negligence caused me permanent kidney failure. And he never thought to test my cholesterol afterwards which is another cause of strokes, until I thought to ask about it months later. Know that I could hardly communicate, couldn't follow the simplest TV show. I needed speech therapy for months. But I was finally the one to think of it.
I've also fired my first neurologist and my first gastroenterologist for equally stupid things. You are wise to go onto a great site like this one.
