I want so desperately to help my daughter who does not believe she has schizophrenia even though she has been diagnosed. she gets social security and I'm her payee but she thinks her delusions are real and that we are just trying to make her take meds that cause schizophrenia. how do I get through so she will trust that I love her so much and never want to hurt her. I want her to get well. help how to convince her
If your daughter is delusional it is more difficult, but possible to help her and yourself. Educating yourself through programs offered by organizations like the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI.org) is critical. They have programs for caregivers as well as the individual with a mental illness. I have worked for this organization for several years educating and advocating for folks like myself and your daughter. As you learn about the illness, you come to accept it more. Therapy is another worthwhile tool. Being able to share with someone not only offers a reality check, but also can teach coping skills. Don't give up hope. It takes some people longer than others to accept their illness, but with continued loving support and tools such as what NAMI has to offer she will get better.
