I started taking Contrave today, I also take Tylenol 3 for osteoarthritis pain periodically. The pharmacist told me there should be no interference however, I see a lot of people saying pain medications do not work while on Contrave. I also read that I should not take pain meds while on this. I know the pharmacist said there would not be any issues, but I’m nervous. Has anyone else had to take narcotics while on Contrave? I’d much rather not take the pain medication if there’s a chance of a problem.
I think your pharmacist is wrong. Contrave significantly reduces pain relief from opiates or codeine. The active ingredients in contrava are 1) Naltrexone, a medication used to stop opiate dependence by blocking the receptors that opiates incloding codeine target, this it will stop the codeine from working. The second active ingredient is 2) bupropion. I would like to first explain how codeine relieves pain, alot of codeine’s analgesic properties are because it is metabolized in your body to become mostly morphine. Bupropion inhibits the transformation from codeine to morphine so it is also known to reduce codeine’s analgesic effects significantly.
