My mother was diagnosed with hep c many years ago. She tried the Pegasus and Ribavrin combination and it did not work. Her hep c is in stage 4, not sure how bad her liver damage is because she will not disclose. However, she has is still drinking daily while on the treatment. She won't listen to me when I explain to her that it is not healthy for her to do that... what should I say to encourage her to stop drinking?
This is nothing you can say to a person. That have to want to quit. Believe me I know. I drank heavily for many years. It is very sad because I am stage 4 cirrhosis I took Harvoni and I am Hep c free. The only thing I can say to tell her that there a thousands of people who are very sick and would give anything to be on Harvoni. However, financially they can not. Your mother is wasting her time, your time and her doctor's time. Sorry to be blunt, I know you are hurting. Her drinking has nothing to do with you remember that. Drunks don't care who they hurt. Please forgive me for saying this ... but to your mother I say. On behalf of those who are suffering, in pain or near death and can't get on Harvoni and to all their family friends who suffer right beside them ... your actions are like a slap in the face.
Ask/tell her if everytime she has a drink she can tick off a week or so, with every single drink costing a week of life. Maybe tell her that Harvoni does not cause a natural liver reset and that she keeps going as she is she will be dead in 5 years, HCV or not. That gives her a couple of years without increasing side effects.
Gosh, this is so hard to read. My heart is breaking for you and for her. Have you ever done an intervention on her? If you havent i suggest hitting an al anon meeting and getting some help with setting one up. I have been clean and sober for a little over 10 years, but to be honest, i only quit when i was ready. Each person reaches thier ready in their own way. If your singular pleas have fallen on deaf ears and the risk of ending up in icu for drinking while on harvoni are not enough to deter her then she is, by definition an alcoholic. There is a slight chance that when the pleas of the many who love or care for her are brought to her ears that she may take the cotton out of her ears and listen. She may not. Please dont take it personally. I assure you, if she had the power to just stop, she would have already. She is sick in more than just the hep c and she will need help. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
My heart goes out to you. And Naturally she is your mother and you want her to "do the right thing" by not drinking and take advantage of this cure. While your intentions I am sure are based on love and support, I am sorry to say they are useless to someone who is an alcoholic, or anyone who has an addiction. Like the previous people ( some with experience) have commented, I am afraid there are no words that will get through to her. Before Harvoni, the fact that she is stage 4 with cirrhosis she had already made a decision not to stop drinking. Now with the Miracle Cure,Harvoni, she is still drinking says to me she may never stop. But If it were me I would contact her Doctor and advise him/her of her behavior and get information as to the affects of Harvoni and Alcohol combination and go from there. Take if from me it is very difficult to change peoples behavior, they must see the light on their own! Good luck!
