Have you though of adding a fiber supplement? You could try something like FiberCon in tablet form or there are a few choices of fiber supplement to add to liquids. Benefiber is nice because it doesnt add any flavor or texture to the liquid you add it to but it is a little more expensive. There is Citrucel which you add to water and has an orange citrus flavor. It is less gritty than some fiber supplements but it will thicken as it sits. Metamucil is another popular supplement but many dont like the grittiness. It thickens as it sits too. My favorite is the Benefiber. Second to that I would take the FiberCon tabs because of the convenience of tabs but they are very big tabs so if you have trouble swallowing pills they may not be for you. Drinking lots of water is very very important. Be sure you are drinking 64 oz a day. Water is preferable. Tea, coffee and soft drinks, like colas, dont count as fluids because they tend to dehydrate more than add fluid. Tea and coffee especially dehydrate. For each cup of tea or coffee you consume, you need 2-3 cups of water to replace the fluid lost by the diuretic action of tea or coffee! Many people dont realize this and think since they sip iced tea all day they consume plenty of fluids but that is not the case. Water is best or low sugar fruit juices being next best for fluid replacement. If you want a natural approach to a stool softener/laxative try Senna, like Sennokot. It is a little better for you than some of the harsher chemical laxatives. You do well in trying to avoid chemicals and trying to take a more natural approach. Try adding the fiber supplement. I really think it will help a lot. It bulks the stools up making them soft but easy to pass. Another good thing, that works well, is to eat a bowl of bran cereal like Bran Flakes or 100% Bran, raisin bran, any of those cereals as well as Old Fashioned Oats are good sources of fiber.
My meds constipate me too. I now have been taking 1 colace, and 1 sennoside pill at bedtime. I drink alot of water also. Eat alot of fruit and vegies too. But I still need to take it because I also am prone to hemorroids. It works for me. Then you can have your life back and visit your friends and family. Hope this helps you. Good luck! smileyhappy.
