Linzess is usually used for either constipation from unknown reasons or for IBS related constipation. If you have been constipated for some time you may have a lot of stools backed up and a drug like this can cause cramping as the gut gets to moving again to expel all the built up stool. Diarrhea becomes common after about 2 weeks use and this is because by this time, you are likely cleaned out. Linzess works by increasing the secretion of chloride and water in the intestines, which can soften stools and stimulate bowel movements. Other side effects are gas, stomach-area (abdomen) pain
swelling, or a feeling of fullness or pressure in your abdomen (distention). If this gets too uncomfortable, you need to tell the Dr.
This is the second question that I have seen where doctors have prescribed Linzess. This med is often used for IBS-C the C stands for constipation. The cramps and spasms it causes for most IBS sufferers make it a poor choice. It is completely out of the question for those with IBS-D (Diarhea) or anyone with mixed IBS (constipation alternating with diarhea) as the Linzess itself can cause severe diarhea.
Contact your doctor asap as there are much better meds to use for IBS and this one is obviously not for you.
