A Dr. suggests using Commadin in place of Xarelto because if I need Emergency Surgury for anything, it can't be done while taking Xarelto. Just looking for an opinion. Concerned about using Xarelto due to all the publicity!
The publicity is coming from ambulance chasing lawyers. However, I would not want to take any of the new anticoagulants. The reason is because there is no test to see how its working and there is no antidote if you are bleeding or need emergency surgery. I would much sooner test my inr every day then take something I have no idea how its working.
Yes it can. What kind of doctor suggested this change? If they are not a hematologist or possibly a cardiologist why would you take this suggestion without consulting this type of specialist? Ignore the lawyers. You still have a bleeding risk using Coumadin just like any other anticoagulant. What happens if you cannot stabilize your INR while taking Coumadin? What kind of risk will you be taking? Since you did not give any information on your underlying condition there is not way to give you any additional insight. You could also consider using Lovenox or Arixtra instead of Coumadin.
You can test for Xarelto but most doctors do not know how to do this as it is not a standard laboratory test. That is why you should be seeing a hematologist. There is a reversing agent in final testing that is on a fast track and if you are at or near a large or teaching hospital they probably have it on hand in limited quantities.
