I have a bottle of Promethazine with codeine syrup. Is says it expired 1/16/2014... Would it still be effective at all? I am having cataract surgery tomorrow and have a cough... I want to be sure I do not cough during the procedure.

They put experation dates on meds for one reason only and that is to tell the consumer that after that date the effectiveness of the medication can no longer be trusted to be effective. My rule is after 6 months past any experation date I dispose of them if their pills and all liquids is 3 months. I don't take chances with my health
