... particularly interested in knowing whether some go to AA even though booze is not their primary problem. I find most people in AA are accepting of all people's addictions, which is much different than it was 30 years ago or so.
A friend went cold turkey before, and he lasted about 50 days. I'm encouraging him to reach out and go to meetings. He can't just pick up and go to rehab. That's not an option for him.
Have you thought about N/A? It's similar in that it has the STEPS like in A/A only it deals more with substance abuse. You're expected to go to as many meetings as possible, you'll have a sponsor, etc. I think it really helps a lot of people. My daughter is a sponsor for 2 people and she is a success story. She's made some wonderful friends too. I would definitely encourage your friend to attend some meetings. Maybe you could go with to help him through the first one. After that, it gets easier. Pretty soon he'll find himself wanting to go. That's very kind of you to check on this for your friend. take care and hope you have a great new year!
