Should Clonazepam / Rivotril be given to a very young child diagnosed with "Sleep Terrors" on a long term basis (12months or longer)? and what are it's possible benefits or negatives effects for the long and short term?
Clonazepam is commonly given to children as young a one to help control seizure activity so as far as giving to a very young child it is ok. Be aware that it can cause for some people, not all, more vivid dreams and nightmares though not likely. If taken for an extended period of time, it can not be stopped abuptly, but must be tapered off slowly over time so to prevent withdrawal symptoms. While you need to watch your child for any adverse side effects this should be a good medication to help your child sleep better.
