My 10 old daughter has now been admitted twice for suicidal thoughts. She's been on Prozac but they want to add risperdal, which I declined bc she's been on before. I was thinking about maybe taking her off Prozac and requesting Anafranil in its place. Anyone have any input??
Anafranil is an older, tricyclic antidepressant as you may well know. It is prescribed for children with obsessive/compulsive thinking. Here is the link for dosages: https://www.drugs.com/dosage/anafranil.html
There are many antidepressants, some similar to Prozac, that are possibilities, also. Problem is many have not been tested on younger children. Hope more people with younger children on antidepressants chime in here.
I can't comment on paediatric use but had no luck with the new medications. From experience it does reduce depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation and a few others. Sadly it does not affect delusions or hallucinations. The only downside is that it induces sleep (as a side effect) and as a lesser permanent effect.
When i was on Prozac i was extremely suicidal and it was dangerous for me. It made me feel zombie like and was unhealthy for my depression. Personally for me i have been on Zoloft and it has helped a ton. It just depends on the record of the family and the pills that would work for their depression. But personaly i would reccomend getting her off prozac if she is having suicidal thoughts.
