I started 10mg of celexa 27 days ago that I take once a day before bed. I felt great! But as of yesterday I have really bad anxiety that lasts all day, I woke up with it this morning and am wondering if it is just a bump in the road or if I need to be on a higher dosage? I loved how normal I felt but now I feel discouraged after feeling bad again. Any suggestions?
An SSRI like Citalopram can usually be relied on to reduce the severity and frequency of panic attacks. But it doesn't necessarily prevent them altogether. I've been on an SSRI for anxiety for years. A few years into the treatment, since I was still having panic attacks, I was prescribed Clonazepam, a benzodiazepine. Unlike an SSRI, a benzodiazepine can effectively halt a panic attack already in progress. On the downside, they are physically addictive with a potentially very nasty withdrawal syndrome. You might consider asking your doctor about a benzodiazepine for emergencies. In my experience, just having the bottle handy is enough to stop panic a lot of the time. And if you just use it for panic attacks, there would be very little chance of you developing an addiction. Personally, I don't think it would be wise to increase your dose. You say you're feeling better, and that's what antidepressants are for - you're getting the clinical benefits of it, and any increase in dosage carries with it an increased chance of side effects.
