So I've been taking citalopram 10mg for a little over a year but my anxiety has come back so i went and saw my doctor and he prescribed 30mg amitriptyline to take at night with the citalopram but everything im reading says theres a risk of serotonin poisoning so I'm not sure what i should do he said if it doesn't work out just take 2 of the citalopram but I'm so confused. Help somebody please.
While serotonin syndrome is rare and both medications are in low dosages, if the possible interaction scares you, I would go with option 2. Increasing the citalopram to 20 mgs puts it in the average therapeutic range so will most likely help your anxiety.
Hi, i used to take these medications together with no problems. Citalopram at 60mg and Amitriptyline at 50mg. Obviously the risk of contracting serotonin syndrome is something that needs to be taken seriously, but on the other hand it is rare. You should make yourself familiar with the symptoms to be safe. It may be more effective to do as Laurie has said, and increase the Citalopram, but see how you go...
