The nodules form in places where the Liver has attempted to regenerate and are typically separated by scar tissue. They are not dangerous as such but an indicator of Cirrhosis. Cirrhotic Livers have a nodular surface appearance therefore their presence is diagnostic of the condition.
Regular abdominal ultrasounds will show progressive changes in the Liver surface from smooth (fatty Liver) to nodular (cirrhotic Liver) as the disease progresses.
