I recently purchased a e-cigarette because i have been getting the urge to smoke. I wouldnt be smoking it everyday but i will be smoking then once in a while. would this change the effectiveness of my nuva ring?
Cigarettes and nicotine dont affect the ability of birth control to work. Smoking or using a nicotine delivery system doesnt interfere with contraceptive effectiveness, it still prevents pregnancy, what it does is it raises your chances of having bad side effects from the hormones like blood clots and strokes. Your birth control will work, you'll just have a higher risk for having those certain complications. If a woman is 35 or over and she smokes or uses nicotine at all (including delivery systems which is what the e-cig is) she should NOT use hormonal birth control because the risk then outweighs the benefits. If you are not already a smoker, I dont know why you would want to risk getting yourself addicted to nicotine. Nicotine is one of the most highly addictive substances on Earth! Some say it is even more addictive than heroin. You are better off to resist the urge because "smoking occasionally" or "smoking socially" has a way of becoming an additive habit and instead of wanting to use nicotine, you will HAVE to use nicotine. To let you know how powerful a nicotine addiction is I will give you my own experience. I started smoking when I was 12 or so. I thought it was "cool" and in the place I lived, everyone smoked (they STILL do, I have since moved and I really notice how much more people smoke there when I go back for a visit) By the age of 19-20, I was smoking a pack to a pack and a half a day, I couldnt laugh heavy without coughing, I could barely make it up a flight of stairs (and I wasnt over weight, I just couldnt breathe) So I decided to quit. I did manage to quit with the help of my non smoking boyfriend (he is now my husband) and I havent smoked regularly since then and so it has been almost 27 years since I smoked regularly and I STILL get cravings!! Especially if I have a cocktail or two, then I really get the urge to smoke and I have given in a time or two and I usually regret it because it makes me dizzy and sick and I cant imagine how I ever got past that to become addicted. My cravings are fleeting things and easy to ignore. I get the weakest when I have had a couple drinks and others are smoking. If you are still at a point that you can NOT have to smoke, dont even get yourself started! Ecig may not be "smoking" but it is still addictive. It is just another delivery system for the drug nicotine.
