I have severe Sciatica on rt side of body from lumbar area to foot. Doctors have done an MRI which showed several problems with discs on left side of spine which leaves the severe pain with no answer. I had 1 epidural pain injection last week with no change. Does anyone have any possible answers? I appreciate all your help.
Hi Lorrainy. I have had sciatica from 3 herniated lumbar disks for years. Normally I will get pain down my right leg only. I have had the steroid shots at least three times. Sometimes those shots take at least a couple of weeks before you get any relief so don't give up yet.
I am curious as to what pain medication you are taking, if any. Also has your doctor suggested physical therapy? I know you are in pain but believe me the physical therapy does help.
I also have degenerative disk disease and sciatica, with pain down the right side, and it wasn't until I suffered for years and went through more than a dozen injections that I went to one Physical Therapist who found that a lot of my problems were actually coming from the SI joint, which sort of connects the hip to the spine, so a lot of that lower back pain and soreness was coming from that, rather than my disks. NOT TO SAY there wasn't something serious happening with the disks - but the Physical Therapist had me come in twice a week, put on hot/wet gel packs for about 20 minutes, do a high-intensity ultrasound treatment (which doesn't look for anything, it just brings blood to the area that needs healing), and then massage.
The massage was to break down the knotted muscles, created by "protecting" that area from pain for all those years, and from the dysfunction in the joint and how it was moving. So with a lot of breaking down the muscle and stretching, he got the joint to open up a lot more, and helped me with a lot of the pain.
I never found relief from the sciatica, though. I had to resort to a major surgery and have a spinal cord stimulator implant.
:( That was hard to heal from, but it resolved 70-75% of my pain. That was after being on narcotics and trying EVERYTHING for about 6 years. WAY too much suffering. You just get to that point...
I have been suffering from chronic pain and severe sciatica for years now. I have had the epidural shots and faucet injections both to no avail. Those shots might work for some people but not all people. I have had some significant help from a chiropractor (you may need to see more than one before you get good relief, I went to one that caused more pain and just about gave up, then found one this year that's great), also I have been on Norco 10mg 3x day and that's the only 2 things that give me any relief.
