It's been many a month since I wrote on here, but I really need some ideas, my friends. Please, can you help me? My insurance is taking my gabapentin from 5.00 a month, to 50.00/month starting January 2018. This gives me less than 2 months to wean off a drug I've been taking for 8 years at 3200mg per day. I am really concerned. Does anyone have any suggestions for an alternate drug, and to wean off the gabapentin safely?
I am so sorry to hear that! The most similar medication is Lyrica it's honestly the same thing but stronger. I heard Cymbalta can be a good sustitute but I never took it personally. If you can't get Lyrica or fit the gabapentin in your budget, take magnesium while weaning. I read about this and it is supposed to help with any withdrawals. It might be worth trying to fit the copay into your budget if possible only because it is so effective. Lyrica is really the only thing that is exactly like it. Try for that definitely! Good luck with everything!
What do you take the Gabapentin for? If you take the Gabapentin for epileptic reasons there's quite a few established epilepsy medications that are not as expensive. However, if you take it for nerve pain which I suspect you do your options are more limited.
Have you spoken to your doctors and told them about the significant cost increase that's going to happen at the beginning of the year?
If I were you I would have your doctor write Pfizer a letter stating how long you have taken Gabapentin and how important the medication is to your health & well being.
If that alone is not enough I would call every pharmacy including online pharmacy's to get the lowest price possible.
Also, maybe the drug would be cheaper if you got a 90 day supply.
Finally, in addition to prescription coverage might you also have a AARP or AAA card which would also bring the cost of the drug down?
Whatever you do Tee keep trying!
If you have no luck with your doctor continue to call the drug manufacturer Pfizer and ask for help?
Best of luck!
