I'm 23, approximately 2 years ago I started taking celexa (40mg/daily.) I gained about 50 pounds over the last 2 years (mainly the last year) I feel good, my anxiety is under control but I'm so disgusted about the way I look and feel that I don't know what I can do anymore! I work out, I'm a vegetarian and watch what I eat and drink plenty of water. I'm so ashamed of myself. Any suggestions? Should I take a different medication or they all have this nasty side effect? I'm too afraid to stop taking it since I had anxiety so bad that I couldn't function before starting celexa.
I only take 10 mg and have gained 50 lb in last couple years... am looking into other meds on the same order of Celexa but have found nothing... Sad thing is it works I get mad and go off it and then usually have couple bad attacks and go back on it and am ok for a while and then I do it all over again. Am wondering how many lbs I am going to gain before I level off.. or will I?
I cannot begin to explain the frustration i had with celexa and weight gain. The exact thing your describing happened to me my freshman year in college. It was irritating bc my psychiatrist kept dismissing it as my "freshman 15" even though I have told him repeatedly that I live at home with my parents still so 1.) i eat breakfast and dinner from home & even bring my lunch 3/4ths of the time like ive done my entire life & 2.) i have NEVER gained that much weight (i gained 30 lbs freshman year). So I switched doctors and switched meds. Im now on 300mg of wellbutrin and .25 mg of xanax as needed. Wellbutrin has been amazing as far as side affects go. I have energy and im losing weight. So far I've lost 22 lbs. but it is not helping with my anxiety near as well as celexa did & The xanax makes me even more depressed once i come off of it after 11 hours.
So now i am in a situation where i want a medicine to work like celexa without the decreased sex drive and weight gain and to be honest im having a tough time finding one. But maybe wellbutrin would be a good option to get the weight off. It has helped me tremendously, just not as good as celexa.
