Is there ever any significant differance between taking a generic drug opposed to the name brand one for any given medical condition? Is the or are the name brands stronger, more potent and have a longer life time or is it that they are just put out by a diff pharmaceutical company which makes their profit from reducing overall prices for the drug itself? I seem to have received a few diff answers on this very question and would like to know hopefully will the outcome be the same?
Yes, it is my opinion that SOME generic drugs are not quite as strong as the brand. They only have to be like 80% the same, or something like that, is what I was told. Not sure if that is true. But based on what some people say there can be differences.
Do not know about celexa (citalopram) though, sorry.
Hi blaze. The FDA mandates the active ingredients MUST be the same between brand name and its' generic. What they don't tell you is the fillers they use can be different. Many people have bad reactions to these "fillers" or non active ingredients. Depending on the medication, many doctors will insist on name brand only. I found this to be true with valium. Sorry, but not familiar with generic Celexa fillers. I can look it up and see what the differences are.
Great question by the way!!!
there are a lot of different people that look at it different ways, if the generic does not cause you a problem, effect etc and the price is lower then thats one thing, My system is different in the way it tolerates certain medicines, for instance I have problem taking Dilaudid for pain there are only 2 generics out of the bunch that I tolerate well so finally after having an injury and getting worse with my already chronic pain my doctor found a drug andit works for me, but it only is made in brand name (due to the patent) so the brand name in this case helps work much more effectively, medicines are expensive to say the leaast but when medicines are a brand name then that adds to the expense, My insurance company wasn't going to cover this but the doctor had documented trying me on at least several other medications, once she was able to prove this then they were willing to pay for it, I wish you the very best of luck,
Blaze I wish I could give you an honest answer some people say one thing and others say another, I feel this way about generics in general I have problem particularly with taking medicines for Chronic pain, I seem to have problems tolerating some of the generics, I will say this much how one thing effects one person can have a totally different effect on another person, I wish you the very best
