Cefuroxime is in a group of drugs called cephalosporin antibiotics. It's a 2nd generation cephalosporin. It works by fighting bacteria in your body.The mechanism of action of cephalosporins is the same as penicillins. They interfere with bacterial cell wall synthesis (creation). Cefuroxime is similar, but not the same, as Keflex, Omnicef and Cefzil. Keflex is a 1st generation cephalosporin.
