Contemplating surgery. Anyone have experience with the surgery?
Debster Your best bet is get more information from your doctor,The doses are getting pretty high and the higher it gets the more side effects but the best sorse for the surgery is your doctor or when surgery is envolved its reccommended you get a second oppiniun from another doctor this is what i would do with the info that you have given. please go over this with the doctor and ask about who you would see to get a second view.good luck wish i could be more help Chuck1957
My daughter now 3 has bee on so many different meds. She is currently on 1200 mg Tegretol 2X daily, 100 topamax 2 x daily and 8 mg fycompa. daily Had two surgeries on left temporal, one left frontal lobe. Still has 200 seizures monthly. Surgeries work for many people but not all. Meds work for many but not all. Really discuss this with your neurologist, potential surgeon and pray a lot. Surgery is not reversible but we know several people whom have had good success. Best wishes
Not sure what your diagnosis is, but if it's Trigeminal Neuralgia there are several different surgical options. The usual protocol is that they exhaust the drug cocktails they can give you before going down that route. The top surgery is Microvascular Decompression (usually referred to as MVD) After that there are smaller surgeries (gamma knife, rhiz, etc), as well as nerve blocks. Again, if it is TN, find a neurologist who is familiar with it rather than just picking any of them as it's a pretty rare condition. There are also a few really good support groups on FB where the members have an incredible amount of experience with all sorts of meds, surgeries, procedures, docs, etc. Best of Luck.
Side effects from any of the meds can easily be negative, especially in combination w/ one another. What can be even less pleasant can be the particular type of surgery you might be referring to. If it is for a "rather generous resection" of one particular area of brain tissue in a right anterior temporal lobectomy, such as the type I decided to try to decrease my number of seizures, at least be sure and verify that EEG signals from both sides of the brain are checked to verify that the pt. does not suffer from bilateral or multi-focal point origin in seizure disorder. Otherwise the loss of a chunk of brain tissue might be for no purpose except for possible reduced facilities in later life.
