16 year old daughter has severe depression for three or four days and she is unable to function but has no other symptoms the rest of month. We have a prescription for Zoloft but would like to try treatment only for days with symptoms. Has anyone tried this and how did it affect you?
Hello beachmama! I have never known any SSRI that could be taken prn. The drug has to build up in the bloodstream before you can experience any results. When I worked as a psychiatric nurse for 16 years doing medication mgt. with the psychiatrist , he never prescribed any SSRI( that is the cklassification of zoloft,) on an as needed basis. It takes time for the serotonin levels to reach their normal range before you feel the results of the drug. That is why some people may need a higher dose before reaching the normal range of serotonin. When you take these medications as needed and not regularly as the doctor prescribes you may also experience harmful side effects. Please see your doctor before you make any changes in your Zoloft. I hope that I have not confused you and I wish you the best. Sweetie Pie
