My 80 year old mother-in-law has been taking Valium for at least 30 years. She pops a pill or two whenever she feels the situiation may cause her stress. My wife and I argue about this. I think she is abusing the drug and has become dependent. She has bottles of Valium hidden around her house and is always taking them. She has many of the symptoms of abuse and I feel her failing medical condition and deteriorating mental state is due primarily to this abuse. My wife says she is OK. How can I help her? My wife is the sole care provider for her Mom who is incredibly difficult to deal with...
Ooh, this is a tough one. As you said, you see her HIDING bottles of Valium everywhere. That is a sign of abuse. I have been on Valium, and other med's alike for quite a few years myself. Because I have been on them for a long time, sometimes I need more than other days, or so I think. I am a recovering drug addict, but I won't lie. I know in all reality, I only need what is prescribed to me, but my addictive behavior tells me otherwise. I know this isn't the best answer, but you are talking to someone who has something in common with your mother in law.
